EdUHK Marks 10th Anniversary of Retitling
A Decade of Transformation in Shaping the Future of Education
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (27 May) celebrates the 10th anniversary of its retitling, marking an important milestone in the University’s development. Since the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR Goverment) retitled “The Hong Kong Institute of Education” as “The Education University of Hong Kong” in 2016, the University has steadily expanded its positioning, teaching, research, innovation, knowledge transfer, as well as national and international engagement, evolving into an education-focused university with diversified academic strengths and a global outlook.
Dr David Wong Yau-kar, Chairman of the Council of EdUHK, said, “The 10th anniversary of our retitling not only represents a major milestone in the University’s development, but also underscores our continuous progress in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation over the years. We are deeply grateful for the trust and support of the HKSAR Government, the community and all our stakeholders. Looking ahead, the University will move forward steadily in line with its Strategic Plan 2025–2031, actively integrate into the development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and align with national development priorities, thereby contributing to consolidating Hong Kong’s position as an international education hub.”
Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, remarked, “The 10th anniversary of our retitling is a significant landmark in the University’s history. On this occasion, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to the HKSAR Government, the Council of EdUHK, the University Grants Committee, the Education Bureau, students, staff, alumni and stakeholders. Over the past decade, guided by the principle of ‘Education-plus' and now by the vision of ‘Education Futures’, the University has made continuous breakthroughs in programme development, research and innovation, knowledge transfer, and internationalisation. These achievements reflect the dedication and contributions of our former and present Council and leadership teams, students, staff, alumni and the entire EdUHK community, laying a solid foundation for the University’s sustainable development in the years ahead. Looking ahead, we will continue to make meaningful contributions to society at local, national and international levels through world-class education, and align with the national policy on the integrated development of education, technology and talents.”
Over the past 10 years, EdUHK has advanced academic diversification, expanding its programme areas to include education, psychology, data science, sociology, sports science, new media, personal finance, and other disciplines. The University now offers 109 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, while all 13 Bachelor of Education programmes have been fully transformed into double-degree pathways, providing students with broader interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Student enrolment has grown by nearly 45 per cent over the past decade to more than 16,000, while the University has nurtured over 52,000 educators and professionals contributing to various sectors in Hong Kong and worldwide.
Our research has also expanded into new disciplines. Beyond education technology, the University has also strengthened expertise in neuropsychology, health technology, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, driving innovations that benefit society. Since 2018, EdUHK researchers have received 234 awards at major international invention exhibitions. Knowledge transfer has also made remarkable progress, with related income nearly tripling year-on-year to HK$800 million in 2025, supported by more than 170 government-funded research projects and 107 start-up teams.
In terms of talent and academic strengths, 54 EdUHK scholars were named among the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists by Stanford University last year. The University has also actively integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its curricula, strengthened staff training, and established the Honours College to nurture future leaders who combine academic excellence, innovative thinking, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
EdUHK has also been a pioneer in supporting elite student-athletes, helping students balance their academic pursuits and sporting careers. At the National Games last year, more than 40 EdUHK students and alumni achieved historic success by winning gold medals in five events, demonstrating the University’s strengths in whole-person education and diverse talent development.
On the international and regional fronts, EdUHK has built partnerships with more than 200 institutions across over 40 countries and regions, including Chinese Mainland, Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, the United States and Belt and Road countries. Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, as the UNESCO Chair in Regional Education Development and Lifelong Learning, has contributed in this capacity to the University’s ongoing efforts in promoting quality education, equitable access to technology and sustainable development, nurturing a new generation with a global vision and a strong sense of civic responsibility.
These achievements are increasingly reflected in international rankings. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, EdUHK’s education discipline rose to a record-high 7th globally and 2nd in Asia. In the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026, EdUHK made its debut at 37th place, placing it among the leading universities in Asia and highlighting the growing international recognition of the University’s strengths in education and overall academic development.
In line with the University’s continuous growth, EdUHK’s infrastructure network has also been enhanced. The new academic building at the Tai Po campus came into operation this year, alongside teaching centres in North Point and at the Xiqu Centre and M+ in the West Kowloon Cultural District, as well as the EdUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) and the EdUHK Shenzhen Educational Development Centre (SZEDC), providing stronger support for the future development of the EdUHK community.
Standing at this new starting point on the 10th anniversary of its retitling, EdUHK will remain rooted in education while actively pushing the boundaries of academic disciplines. The University will further integrate education with AI, cultural and creative industries, social innovation and sustainable development, building a more forward-looking, flexible and globally oriented education system to nurture the talent needed for the future of Hong Kong, the nation and the world.
