EdUHK Marks 10th Anniversary of Retitling with Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Concert
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its retitling on 22 May at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, serving as the title sponsor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) concert The Hero’s Quest. As part of the celebration, the University invited more than 160 local primary and secondary school students—including non-Chinese speaking students—to enjoy the performance, underscoring its mission to promote arts education, cultural heritage, and community engagement.
Conducted by maestro Chew Hee-chiat, Assistant Artistic Director and Resident Conductor of the HKCO, the concert featured a programme themed around Hong Kong’s martial arts film and television music. Spanning half a century, HKCO presented a vibrant collection of classic tunes, including Iron, Blood and Loyal Heart, The Smiling Proud Wanderer, Chor Lau Heung, Forgetting the Love of My Heart, and The Understudy. Vocalists Mischa Ip Hau-lam and Raymond Young Lap-moon delivered heartfelt performances, while Guan and Suona virtuoso Qin Ji-tao provided a rousing highlight.
The closing piece, Fantasia on Louis Cha’s Martial Art Novels, comprised seven segments—Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils: Traversing Mountains and Rivers, The Return of the Condor Heroes: Mythical Love Words, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils: Both Forgotten in the Misty Waters, The Book and the Swor, The Legend of the Condor Heroes: You Are the Best in the World, and The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. The suite’s sweeping momentum and emotional depth provided a fitting finale, leaving the audience captivated by the timeless spirit of martial arts.
The University hosted a pre-concert reception that brought together distinguished guests, alumni, and partners to reflect on a decade of achievements and look ahead to future development. Attendees included EdUHK Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, and Acting Head and Associate Professor of the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts Dr Prudence Lau Leung-kwok. HKCO Council Chairman Mr Henry Lai Hin-wing, Assistant Artistic Director and Resident Conductor Mr Chew Hee-chiat, and vocalist Mr Raymond Young Lap-moon, also joined the occasion.
The event was officially opened with a welcome address by Professor Chan, who remarked, “The 10th Anniversary of the University’s retitling is an important milestone. Reflecting on the achievements of the past decade, EdUHK has pursued excellence in teaching and research while actively promoting the development of arts and culture. Through collaborations with professional arts organisations, the University has broadened students’ horizons and strengthened cultural connections between the campus and society.”
Dr Lau then addressed the audience, emphasising the Department’s vision of “educating through culture”—bringing the arts into the community, integrating teaching with social engagement, and nurturing students’ humanistic qualities and sense of social responsibility.
EdUHK has been rolling out a series of activities throughout its 10th Anniversary year, with the next highlight being a music performance on 6 September at Pacific Place. Featuring students, alumni, and community groups, the event will present In Praise of Teachers in diverse formats. Coinciding with Teachers’ Day, the performance will further extend the reach of arts and culture beyond the campus, fostering broader community exchange and integration.
