EdUHK Holds Exchange Activity with Guangzhou Cultural Centre to Foster the Preservation of Xiqu and Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held an exchange activity with the Guangzhou Cultural Centre on 14 December on its Tai Po campus, aiming to foster cultural exchange and the inheritance of xiqu and intangible cultural heritage (ICH).

The event was organised by the Xiqu and Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre (XICH) of EdUHK, with the Lingnan Traditional Quyi Institute invited to participate. During the event, both parties engaged in discussions to inspire the work of preserving xiqu and ICH in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, and advocate sustainable development of ICH projects on campus. EdUHK introduced its "Yueju Accomp" application, launched in 2022, the first of its kind to be patented in Hong Kong. The application simulates the performance of commonly used instruments in xiqu through tablet devices, demonstrating the integration of traditional Cantonese opera music with modern technology.

Following the discussions, both parties presented xiqu performances. Ms Chen Lingyu, the artistic director of the Lingnan Traditional Quyi Institute cum National Class One performer and renowned Cantonese opera pipa player, led performers from the Guangzhou Cultural Centre in singing "The United Knot". On behalf of EdUHK, Tsang Tze-huen, who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Heritage Education and Arts Management, performed "Nocturnal Tears over an Epistle". Both performances conveyed emotions, leaving the audience with lingering melodies.

Professor Leung Bo-wah, Executive Director of the XICH said, “Fostering the preservation of Xiqu and intangible cultural heritage requires keeping pace with the times, exploring innovative paths, and striving to preserve traditional culture while incorporating modern technology.
