EdUHK and IOE Co-host Summer Conference on Leadership in Language and Culture

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) Graduate School and the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation (AEDI) co-hosted the Summer Conference on Leadership in Language and Culture on 8 July at EdUHK’s Tai Po campus, supported by the International Centre for Intercultural Studies at the Institute of Education, University College London (IOE-UCL). The conference attracted over 180 leading scholars, education practitioners, policymakers, young scholars and students from the United Kingdom, the United States and Hong Kong, to explore the synergy of language, culture and leadership in education.

In his opening remarks, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin expressed his gratitude to partner colleagues from EdUHK and IOE-UCL for their support and efforts. He traced the development of the partnership with IOE-UCL, highlighting the growing relationships with today’s keynote speakers – who were also key drivers of the collaboration between the two institutions – that flourished, fostering institutional dialogues, faculty-student visits, and the launch of collaborative projects. He shared his February visit to IOE-UCL, where he was warmly received by Dean Professor Li Wei. During the visit, he also met our PhD student, who was participating in EdUHK's exchange scheme at IOE-UCL. EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin thanked Professor John O'Regan, the student's host supervisor at IOE-UCL, for his guidance and support. He expressed his hope that the day’s discussions would further deepen academic exchange and collaboration between the two institutions, thus working together to contribute to the advancement of global education.

Six scholars were invited to deliver keynote addresses on the topics of language education, leadership in the digital era, multilingual thinking, process of internationalisation, intercultural practices, and the impact of digital media on youngsters. The speakers were:

  • Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, EdUHK President and Chair Professor of Curriculum and Instruction on ‘Translanguaging, AI & Talent Development: Implications for Leadership in Language Education’
  • Professor Li Wei, IOE-UCL Director, Dean and Professor of Applied Linguistics on ‘Co-learning and Leadership in Language Education in the Digital Age’
  • Professor Agnes He Weiyun, Professor of Applied Linguistics, Stony Brook University on ‘Multilingual Minds: The Cornerstone of 21st-Century Leadership and Cultural Resilience’

  • Professor Michelle Gu Mingyue, EdUHK Dean of Graduate School and Professor of Sociolinguistics on ‘Digital trans-literacies, identity and linguistic inclusivity: Lived practice, theory, and the way forward’

Professor Michelle Gu Mingyue concluded by extending her sincere thanks to all speakers, participants and organisers, and encouraged attendees to engage actively in the conference and networking opportunities. This event marks another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between EdUHK and IOE-UCL, which strengthens intellectual exchange and joint research, thereby contributing to advancing education worldwide.
