President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin Leads EdUHK Delegation Visit UCL Institute of Education to Advance Comprehensive Collaborative Partnerships
A delegation from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) visited the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) in London to deepen research and talent development collaboration between the two institutions on 10 February.
The delegation was led by Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK; together with Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Academic); Professor Michelle Gu Mingyue, Dean of Graduate School; Professor Bruce Macfarlane, Dean of Faculty of Education and Human Development; Dr Eva Lau Yi-hung, Acting Head of Department of Early Childhood Education, and Dr Chery Yum Yen-na, Acting Head of Department of Special Education and Counselling. They were welcomed by Professor Li Wei, Dean of IOE, along with three Vice-Deans: Professor Lynn Ang, Vice-Dean (Research), Professor Nicola Walshe, Vice Dean (Education) and Professor John O’Regan, Vice-Dean (International), as well as a group of renowned scholars specialising in different areas of education.
During the meeting, both institutions discussed the joint research network established in 2023 and actively explored opportunities for deeper and broader academic cooperation and exchange. The meeting also explored the feasibility of several new initiatives, such as Peer Review Partnership, EdD Knowledge Exchange, and formalising PhD student short-term visits. IOE leaders and faculty members commended EdUHK's teaching and research standards highly.
The meeting also reviewed the significant progress of the joint research network established in late 2023, including the approved five seed projects. Both institutions have met regularly to report on progress, continue supporting joint research projects through seed funding, and seek external funding to scale up the research initiatives. The two universities plan to conduct comparative studies between Hong Kong and the UK.
In addition, both institutions will co-host a conference on “Leadership in Language and Culture” in July. The conference will feature esteemed scholars from IOE, including Professor Li Wei, Professor John O’Regan, and Professor Zhu Hua, who will deliver keynote speeches at EdUHK.
Supported by the Doctoral Student Exchange Scheme jointly organised by IOE and EdUHK, selected students will participate in short-term exchange visits to broaden their international perspectives and may also take courses taught by experts from the partner institution. EdUHK PhD Student Guan Lihang was visiting IOE for three months. He is being co-supervised by Professor John O’Regan and Dr David Dai Wei. Another EdUHK PhD student, Miss Justine Chan Ching-hang, will also embark on a visit in April 2025.
Furthermore, EdUHK will collaborate with the UCL Knowledge Lab to study how to enhance university students' problem-solving abilities and engagement in science learning through the Socially Shared Regulation of Learning (SSRL) mechanism in an Extended Reality environment. This research is jointly led by Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK and Director of the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Future of EdUHK; Professor Song Yanjie, Associate Director of the Centre for Immersive Learning and Metaverse in Education of EdUHK; Professor Mutlu Cukurova, Associate Professor in Learning and Artificial Intelligence of UCL Knowledge Lab; and Professor Jiang Bo from East China Normal University
Thanks to their solid partnership, both institutions will foster innovative research and enhance educational practices on a global scale, to achieve impactful outcomes. EdUHK will continue its efforts in contributing towards developing Hong Kong SAR into an international education hub and building our nation into a leading country in education.
