EdUHK Welcomes Visit from UAE Consul General in Hong Kong Promotes Academic Exchange and Collaboration

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) welcomed H.E. Shaikh Saoud Al Mualla, Consul General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Hong Kong for his inaugural official visit on 27 June. The goal of the visit was to deepen academic collaboration between the UAE and Hong Kong, promoting exchanges and development in the fields of education and research.

Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, led the University’s senior management in welcoming the Consul General to Hong Kong and the delegation from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). EdUHK representatives included Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Research and Development), Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, Vice President (Administration), and Professor Lo Sing-kai, Associate Vice President (Internationalisation), along with faculty members.

In the meeting, both sides reviewed the fruitful collaborations between EdUHK and UAE in recent years, including dual degree programmes, a joint research grant and the Summer Academic Development Programme, in collaboration with UAEU, the top-ranked university in the UAE. Both parties also engaged in in-depth discussions on expanding opportunities for UAE students to study in Hong Kong, with plans to introduce additional scholarships and exchange programmes, which highlights EdUHK's commitment to educational collaboration with the Middle East region.

Following the meeting, the Consul General attended the closing ceremony of the summer programme hosted by EdUHK and presented completion certificates to 10 outstanding undergraduate students from the College of Education at UAEU.  This two-week programme offered opportunities for UAEU students to engage with faculty members from EdUHK, explore emerging technologies such as AI, the Metaverse, and 3D printing, as well as experience Hong Kong’s academic and cultural environment.

EdUHK has long been committed to promoting educational collaboration with countries along the Belt and Road initiative, and the UAE is one of the first nations to participate in the initiative. This visit marks a significant new step forward in educational exchange and cooperation between the two parties, with the hope of achieving even more fruitful outcomes in various fields in the future.
