The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) is dedicated to undertake educational outreach activities beyond campus, engaging local schools and communities through tailored lectures, workshops, and voluntary student-run schemes.

Programmed Outreach Activities: Structured Community Engagement

EdUHK’s Team in Community (TIC) programme, managed by the Student Affairs Office (SAO), is a flagship platform for programmed outreach, encouraging students to engage in sustained community service in local schools and neighbourhoods. TIC promotes a culture of volunteerism and citizenship, offering structured opportunities for students to participate as service leaders or organise committees. In 2024, TIC facilitated ongoing service-learning projects, such as tutoring sessions and educational workshops in local schools, designed to address community needs like literacy and social inclusion. These activities, detailed on the SAO’s Community Services page, are planned and scheduled regularly, ensuring consistent impact (https://www.eduhk.hk/sao/en/info/community_services/).

Another key programmed initiative is the Moti-verse: Space of Volpower, a student volunteering platform that promotes social care through structured community activities. In 2024, Moti-verse organised the Chop Chop x Dementia Game programme, a series of workshops and service events held between March 7 and March 23, 2024, targeting inter-generational inclusion. This programme included:

  • Game Design Workshop (March 7, 2024, EdUHK B2-LP-01): A training session for students to design board games for community engagement.

  • “My Story” Stamp-Making Workshop (March 14, 2024, EdUHK B4-G/F-01): Focused on creative activities to connect with elderly community members.

  • Dementia Awareness Lecture and Service (March 16, 2024, Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Fu Heng Estate): A lecture followed by a student-led service for elderly residents with dementia.

  • Second Service and Programme Wrap-Up (March 23, 2024, Hong Kong Christian Service Yuen Chau Elderly Centre): A concluding service session to reflect on community impact.

These events, open to the public through community partnerships, connected EdUHK students with local elderly centres, promoting understanding of dementia and fostering empathy through educational service (https://www.eduhk.hk/sao/en/info/community_services/moti_verse).

Ad-Hoc Outreach Events: Targeted Educational Impact

EdUHK also hosts ad-hoc outreach events to address specific community needs, delivering impactful educational experiences in local settings. A notable example is the 26th Primary STEAM Project Exhibition: Exploring Climate Change, held in 2024 at a local primary school. Organised by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies, this event engaged primary school students through interactive demonstrations and workshops on climate change, encouraging environmental awareness and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning. EdUHK students and faculty led hands-on activities, sharing expertise to inspire young learners in the community (https://www.eduhk.hk/en/press-releases/26th-primary-steam-project-exhibition-exploring-climate-change).

They share their research processes and findings with the publicAmong the nearly 170 entries, students conduct research on natural disasters such as climate change, extreme weather events, food security and risks to biodiversity

Another ad-hoc initiative, the EdUHK SDG Living Laboratory: Tai Po Community Well-Being Project, focused on promoting elderly health and well-being in 2024. Launched with an opening ceremony in Tai Po, this student-led project involved workshops and health education sessions delivered in community centres, addressing elderly care through tailored educational activities. These sessions, open to local residents, demonstrated EdUHK’s commitment to community-driven learning and social responsibility (https://www.eduhk.hk/en/press-releases/eduhk-organises-opening-ceremony-for-the-eduhk-sdg-living-laboratory-tai-po-community-well-being-project-in-promoting-elderly-health-and-wellbeing).

On December 13, 2024, EdUHK’s Department of Health and Physical Education participated in the Tai Po Golden Age Sports and Wellness Day, a community event organised in collaboration with the Home Affairs Department, Tai Po Community Centre, The Salvation Army Multi-Service Centre for Senior Citizens, and the Tai Po District Caring Team. Our team, including staff and students, conducted stretching activities for over 100 elderly residents at a community venue in Tai Po, promoting physical health and social engagement. This event exemplifies our commitment to community outreach, as it brought our educational expertise in health and physical education directly to local residents, fostering well-being beyond our campus. The event’s details are publicly available at https://eduhk.hk/hpe/en/News/News-Events/Empowering-Seniors-Hpe-Joins-Tai-Po-Golden-Age-Sports-And-Wellness-Day.html

Supporting Collaborations and Future Outlook

EdUHK’s outreach efforts are strengthened by partnerships with local organisations. The Department of Cultural and Creative Arts collaborates with schools and cultural organisations to extend arts education, as seen in initiatives like community art workshops and exhibitions (https://www.eduhk.hk/cca/en/activities/outreach/). These collaborations ensure that EdUHK’s educational resources reach diverse audiences, fostering sustainable community development.

Join Our Community Efforts

EdUHK invites schools, community organisations, and individuals to collaborate in our outreach activities. Together, we can build a more inclusive and educated community, driven by the power of learning and service.
