EdUHK Launches New EdD Programme to Nurture Chinese Language Teaching and Research Professionals with Global Vision

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has launched a new Doctor of Education (EdD) Programme in Language Education (Chinese) – the University’s first doctoral degree programme specialising in Chinese language teaching and research.

Unlike similar programmes offered by other local universities, the Programme makes use of EdUHK’s strengths in educational theories and practice, and integrates language education, teaching Chinese as a second language, and Chinese linguistics. It enables students to master the latest teaching theories and design in global Chinese education, and involves them in frontier research in related fields. The Programme is for experienced professionals who seek to have a deeper understanding of the theories and practice of Chinese language education and enhance their capability to resolve educational problems. These professionals include teachers of primary and secondary schools, principals, lecturers, and research staff, executives and policy makers in sectors related to education.

Professor Si Chung-mou, Head of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) at EdUHK, said, “In recent years, demand for Chinese language studies has emerged around the world, which explains the increasing need for Chinese teaching and research professionals.  Emphasising basic theories on one hand, and focusing on both research and teaching practice on the other, the Programme aims to enhance the students’ foundational knowledge and facilitate their future career pursuits in research and professional development in the education sector.

“Language and culture are inseparable,” explained Professor Zhu Qingzhi, Chair Professor of the Department of CHL and Coordinator of the Programme. “While similar programmes are offered in Hong Kong and other regions, our Programme provides students with a unique opportunity to learn in Hong Kong’s distinctive East-meets-West atmosphere, where they can better understand how to effectively explore new philosophies and modes in Chinese language education in a multicultural language setting.”

The Programme will be taught in Chinese (Cantonese or Putonghau), and the students will be required to attend workshops and conferences. One of the graduation requirements is that each student must complete a thesis, guided by one or more supervisors. In addition to the general admission requirements for EdD programmes at EdUHK, the Programme’s specific entry requirement is a Master’s degree in a discipline related to Education or Chinese Language.
