EdUHK Holds Media Reception to Announce New Strategic Directions

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted a media reception today (30 March) under the theme “Galloping to New Heights in the Year of the Horse.” President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, together with Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, and Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, joined senior management to present the University’s latest strategic directions.
In his address, Professor Lee reviewed EdUHK’s major achievements over the past year, highlighting the University’s outstanding performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. EdUHK was ranked 7th globally and 2nd in Asia in Education. This record-breaking achievement represents a historic moment for the University, reflecting sustained progress over three consecutive years and affirming its international standing in the field of education, with strong recognition from the global academic community. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of EdUHK’s retitling, this accomplishment stands as a testament to the collective efforts of the entire University community.
Professor Lee emphasised that, guided by the Strategic Plan 2025–2031, EdUHK will continue to pursue a diversified development strategy. In 2026/27, the University will introduce nearly 50 new taught postgraduate programmes, spanning areas such as Belt and Road Business Communication and Administration, Chinese Values-Based Leadership, Digital Human Resource Management, Mindfulness and Life Education, National Security Law, Occupational Therapy, Inclusive Early Childhood Education, and Science and Robotics Education. These programmes are designed to nurture professionals equipped with interdisciplinary expertise and global perspectives. EdUHK also plans to launch Master’s programmes in Management in the 2027/28 academic year, providing opportunities for students aspiring to advance their studies in business.
To further enhance undergraduate education, EdUHK will establish the Honours College, dedicated to cultivating students of exceptional academic ability, innovative thinking, and social responsibility. Under the mentorship of distinguished faculty, selected students will broaden their global outlook and leadership capacity through research, internships, and exchange opportunities. The inaugural cohort of Honours College students attended the reception and shared their learning experiences.
EdUHK is also preparing to roll out credit-bearing micro-credential programmes, covering areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Beauty, Health and Child Care, Principal and Teacher Training, English, Leadership and Quality Assurance in Higher Education, as well as Management and Negotiation in Business. Designed to meet society’s demand for diverse professional skills, these micro-credentials will promote lifelong learning. They will enable learners to tailor their study paths according to their own time, needs, and pace, thereby continuously enhancing their professional competencies.
Recognising the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on society and knowledge creation, EdUHK has formulated the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Competency Strategy, a three-year blueprint for sustainable development. The strategy encompasses talent cultivation, enhancement of AI and digital literacy among staff, and innovation in AI for education, aiming to deliver landmark outcomes distinctive to EdUHK. Complementing this initiative, the University has introduced a Digital Competency Curriculum, which includes compulsory Year One courses on Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Digital Literacy, alongside advanced courses totalling up to 17 credits. These offerings enable students to acquire knowledge in AI applications, generative tools, and the ethical and social implications of emerging technologies.
A video presentation showcased newly completed campus facilities, including a new teaching building unveiled to the media for the first time, as well as Study Centres at the Xiqu Centre and M+ in the West Kowloon Cultural District. EdUHK has also expanded into the Greater Bay Area, establishing the EdUHK Shenzhen Research Institute at the Shenzhen Virtual University Park to foster innovation and industry-academia collaboration. A training centre will also be established in Luohu District in Shenzhen.
Professor Lee stated that EdUHK will actively foster students’ positive values while continuing to broaden programme development, enhance teaching quality, and strengthen research capacity. The University will promote the application of technology and the translation of research outcomes, enrich teaching facilities, and optimise the campus environment to provide better learning conditions for both local and international students. These efforts aim to attract more global talent to Hong Kong, further consolidating the city’s role as an international education hub. Through these initiatives, EdUHK will contribute to the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan and support the Nation’s strategy to become a global leader in education.
