EdUHK Donates Three Character Classic and Modern Society to Local Primary Schools
To celebrate the achievements of its eponymous project, whose goal is to promote the learning of Chinese classics in primary students, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (20 July) published an audio book entitled Three Character Classic and Modern Society, with copies distributed to all primary schools, universities and public libraries for free. Relevant materials were also made available online to the public.
The research team of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) at EdUHK began the two-year 'Three Character Classic and Modern Society' project in 2018, thanks to the Quality Education Fund’s HK$1.6 million support. Apart from developing teaching materials for upper primary students, the project team also organised a family event and a training workshop for teachers to facilitate the understanding of Three Character Classic and traditional culture, while developing the moral character of students and enhancing their Chinese language competence.
Three Character Classic is considered the preferred choice of reading to introduce children of Chinese history, culture and traditional moral principles. Head of CHL and project director Professor Si Chung-mou said, “Three Character Classic, written in triplets of characters, contains wisdom and inspirational stories of ancient figures and our forebearers, who can be role models for students to develop positive characters. In being exposed to ancient Chinese culture and classical sentence structures, we hope our students can build a solid foundation for reading and writing in Chinese”.
While the project was running, Chinese subject teachers from 28 local primary schools were invited to supplement their daily classroom teaching with the Three Character Classic materials provided by the team. Students could also make use of these tools for self-learning purposes during class suspension amid the pandemic.
The research team compiled the experimental teaching materials into Three Character Classic and Modern Society with interesting illustrations and Cantonese and Putonghua audiobooks. Divided into eight sections, each section contains between five and seven chapters, each covering “Story”, “Knowledge”, “Explanation”, “Translation”, “Appreciation” and “Extended Questions for Reflection”. The book invites readers to reflect on questions that are connected to modern society, and how they can be applied to our daily lives.
Three Character Classic and Modern Society and the related learning materials are now available on the project website at https://www.eduhk.hk/analects/
