EdUHK Confers Honorary Doctorates
At its Congregation today (17 November), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) conferred honorary doctorates on five distinguished individuals in recognition of their remarkable contributions to their fields in advancing education and social progress. Presiding over the ceremony was the Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam, Chancellor of EdUHK and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
The recipients were (in alphabetical order of surname):
- Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, GBS, JP – Doctor of Education, honoris causa
- Dr Rita Fan-Hsu Lai-tai, GBM, GBS, JP – Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa
- Professor Andy Hargreaves – Doctor of Education, honoris causa
- Dr Thomas Leung Kwok-fai, BBS, JP – Doctor of Education, honoris causa
- Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh – Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa
Speaking at the Congregation, Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, President of EdUHK, paid tribute to the five Honorary Doctorate recipients, lauding their lifelong dedication to and enormous contributions in their respective fields. “Dr Fan, Dr Leung and Professor Cheung, in particular, had an extraordinary and pivotal impact at different stages of the foundation and development of what is now EdUHK,” said Professor Cheung.
Professor Cheung also congratulated all 3,590 graduates on the successful completion of their studies, adding that knowledge is key in the 21st century. “What matters most ─ aside from the wealth of knowledge you have gained in your academic studies ─ is your passion for improving the world you live in, your aspiration to live for the betterment of yourself and others, and your determination to be a positive agent of change in society,” added Professor Cheung.
He encouraged the graduates to embrace the world with openness and anticipation and to make a difference. “It is often the cumulative effect of small deeds that ultimately makes big changes to the world,” he said.
Since Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh could not attend the Congregation in person, a presentation ceremony was held on 29 August in Thailand, during which Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh was presented the honorary degree certificate and an academic gown.
