EdUHK Appoints Chinese Contemporary Artist Xu Bing as Visiting Professor and Inaugurates the ‘Where Sky and Earth Meet’ Education Programme

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted a signing ceremony today (26 March) to officially announce the appointment of contemporary Chinese artist Professor Xu Bing as Visiting Professor for a one-year term. This event also marked the launch of the ‘Where Sky and Earth Meet’ Space Art Education Programme, an initiative aimed at nurturing young artistic talent, promoting space art education, and advancing STEAM and future-oriented learning.

During the ceremony, EdUHK President and Director of Academy for Educational Development and Innovation Professor John Lee Chi-Kin signed the letter of appointment with Professor Xu Bing. The occasion was witnessed by the Deputy Director (Culture) in the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government Ms Eve Tam Mei-yee, as well as EdUHK Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum.

Following the ceremony, the inauguration of the ‘Where Sky and Earth Meet’ Space Art Education Programme commenced, featuring a keynote address by Professor Xu entitled ‘What Do We Use to Create Art Today?’. Organised by EdUHK, the education programme will run for one year. Students from EdUHK and local secondary schools will be invited to share their personal feelings, experiences, and worldviews through dynamic digital visual creations. Outstanding artwork will be uploaded to Professor Xu's SCA-1 Art Satellite platform, showcasing a genuine artistic presentation of “Sky meets Earth”. This initiative marks the first time EdUHK and local students will engage in space art creation, sending their art into outer space.

Moreover, EdUHK, in conjunction with Xu Bing Studio, will host a series of enlightening lectures and workshops, introducing participants to a variety of innovative technologies and digital visual creation tools. These sessions will explore new artistic languages and expressions, encouraging participants to think beyond convention and extend their artistic sensibilities beyond traditional art realms and into the cosmos.

“EdUHK stands as one of the best teacher education institutions in Asia and the world with its rich teaching resources and networks. Through this collaboration, I hope to share the creative rights of the Art Satellite with Hong Kong students, guiding them into a multidimensional space for artistic thinking and creation. This will allow them to explore their relationship with the universe, and foster cultural exchange and the development of art education,” Professor Xu Bing said.

EdUHK Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum added, “Education is more than imparting subject knowledge. EdUHK places a high value in nurturing students' creativity, compassion, and interdisciplinary abilities. This collaboration exemplifies EdUHK’s dedication in providing students with enriching learning opportunities, and I look forward to the artwork created by our students.”

EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said, “I would like to extend our gratitude to the LCSD of the HKSAR government for their support. EdUHK is privileged to have Professor Xu Bing as a visiting professor and bringing his space art creation platform, the Xu Bing Art Satellite Creative Residency Project to EdUHK. We are the first institution in Hong Kong to participate in this initiative. In the face of challenges and opportunities brought by new technologies like artificial intelligence and big data, we anticipate that the 'Where Sky and Earth Meet' programme will integrate art education and innovation education, providing students with unique and rewarding learning opportunities.”

The Prologue: Where Sky and Earth Meet exhibition, organised by EdUHK and co-hosted by Xu Bing Studio, is now open to the public at the EdUHK Library. The exhibition features four different zones showcasing original works by Professor Xu Bing, including: Square Word Calligraphy: Art for the People, Square Word Calligraphy: Gold from the Stone, Book from the Sky (Volume 1), and Book from the Ground Pop-up Book – Day.
