21st Primary STEM Project Exhibition “Development in STEM Generation – Living in a Smart City”
Co-organised by the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) ) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and other organisations, the 21st Primary STEM Project Exhibition (PSPE) was held today (18 May) at Hong Kong Central Library. Themed “Development in STEM Generation – Living in a Smart City”, the exhibition featured STEM projects pertaining to smart city blueprints by over 1,000 primary students from Hong Kong, Zhongshan, Guangdong, Shenzhen and Macau.
Smart city development has become the dominant trend in Hong Kong and other world cities. Not only did the HKSAR Government outline the key projects for smart city development in 2017 that are set to be put ahead, by revealing Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong, the government also envisages the big picture of how Hong Kong can be constructed as a smart city in six major areas including “Smart Mobility”, “Smart Living” and “Smart Environment”.
PSPE Committee Chairperson Professor Winnie So Wing-mui commented that, on the theme “Development in STEM Generation – Living in a Smart City” , students are provided the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and explore the possibilities of smart city development in perspectives ranging from the optimisation of existing public infrastructure to the enhancement of lifestyle through latest technology.
The Exhibition was co-organised by Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence Teachers Association, the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education, Hong Kong Education City Limited and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and sponsored by TeleEye Founders' Charity Foundation Limited. Participating students discussed their project outcomes, covering areas such as how they applied their STEM skills, the scientific principles and concepts behind their proposals, and the tests and experiments they used to explore the circumstances or phenomena in daily life.
Serving as adjudicators of the Exhibition at the event were professionals from various fields and dedicated science educators, including professionals from government education bodies of both Hong Kong and Mainland China, the higher education sector and different educational organisations. From nearly 200 participating teams, the adjudicators selected the winners of the“Adjudicator Award” and “Outstanding Award”. Receiving the Adjudicator Award in recognition of their creativity were, among others, Shiqi Primary School High School (Project title: “Automatic Electricity Generator by Water Flow”) , Tai Kok Tsui Catholic Primary School (Project Title: ”Blackboard Tornado”), South Yuen Long Government Primary School (Project Title: “Deceleration Zone with Carrot-and-Stick Tactics”), Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School (Project Title: “Smart Bookshelf for Our Class Monitor”) and Ying Wah Primary School (Project Title: “Tranhomer”).
