As part of the UGC-funded “Future Classrooms Project”, STEM Room has recently been launched to enhance learning and teaching experience at The Education University of Hong Kong, following the introduction of Creative Lab (Pilot Future Classroom) in 2018.

Located on the second floor of Mong Man Wai Library, STEM Room is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for STEM education, including a STEM classroom and a makerspace. Students can make use of the 3-D printers, workbenches, high-end notebooks and laser cutter provided to try making products and collaborate in creative activities when no classes are in session and through advance booking.

“Thanks to the concerted efforts of different offices, departments and academic colleagues in design and support, STEM Room and other Future Classrooms are tailored for future pedagogical models with the latest technologies,” said Librarian Dr Sidney Cheng.

Kindergarten, primary and secondary school teachers and students are also welcome to visit STEM Room at a later stage and experience innovative learning and teaching.

Dr Cheng continued, “With the successful introduction of these modern learning spaces and areas, we hope that pioneering teaching and learning models can be promoted and extended to the wider education sector.”

According to the tentative schedule, summer 2021 will see the completion of the other six Future Classrooms. Although set up specifically for virtual reality applications, creative arts and music, library instruction and multidisciplinary studies, early childhood education and junior primary, senior primary and junior secondary, and special educational needs, programmes and courses in any subject disciplines are welcome to use these rooms. They will be put into operation in the first semester of the 2021/22 academic year.
