EdUHK Receives HK$10.01M Funding for Empowering Coaching

The Department of Health and Physical Education at The Education University of Hong Kong has collaborated with five local sports associations to run a three-year project entitled ‘Youth Sports Development Programme through Empowering Coaching’ with a HK$10.01 million funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. They are Action Sports Foundation, China Dragon Boat Association, Hoops for Hope, Hong Kong Rugby Union, and Hong Kong Tennis Association. Launched in early July, the project aims to promote a motivational and encouraging sports environment for youth through empowering coaching.

The project team comprises Assistant Professor Dr Carman Leung Ka-man, Senior Lecturer Mr Roy Chan Ching-yat, Associate Professor Dr Andy Tse Choi-yeung, Lecturers Ms Simone Tam Sze-man and Miss Carmen Chan Ka-man. As the project leader, the team designs coaching and tutor training programmes, and collaborates with sports associations to provide coaches with the knowledge and skills required. Upon completion of the programme, trained coaches are expected to create a positive environment for young people to gain a sense of autonomy, belonging and competence. In the long run, the project also aims to raise public awareness of creating a motivational environment for young people engaged in sports activities.
