Students Lettie Lo Chi-hoi of the Master of Arts in Music Education programme and Carlos Chow Yin-hong of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) programme at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), who aspire to promote human betterment through music and equity education, have been awarded the 2022 ‘For Our Future’ scholarships. They stood out from some 200 participants and were among the 16 awardees from 13 tertiary educational institutions.

The scholarship was established by the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation to recognise local students who have excellent performance in their academic studies, diverse development and community services. They are also expected to have a strong commitment to Hong Kong and a desire to continue serving society after graduation.

“Music has brought me immense joy. It is not just about knowledge and technique, but also facilitates the holistic development of individuals. Being a music performer and educator helps build my inner strength, courage and resilience. Hence, I have devoted myself to music education and assist the new generation in embarking on their own musical journey,” said Lettie.

As an education major student, Carlos hopes to initiate curriculum changes in the future to minimise inequalities in education and help disadvantaged students achieve upward mobility. “Throughout the years of doing community services in Hong Kong and overseas, I have witnessed how underprivileged groups suffer from social inequality. My service trips to Cambodia and Macedonia, in particular, made me realise that I should not take free education for granted,” he said. 

Both students have proactively participated in many social services over the years. Lettie was a volunteer teacher in local primary schools to help students learn English language through music and games. She also participated in fundraising activities to raise public awareness of mental health and wellbeing, such as Christmas carol singing in the UK, and the Black Dog Project organised by the University of Bristol.

Among other community service achievements, Carlos joined the Macedonia House Building Service Trip to help the underprivileged locals, and the Cambodia voluntary service trip to give lessons and plan curricula for primary school students. As a HKSAR Youth Ambassador, he also visited Ireland on behalf of the Government to promote Hong Kong. Carlos has also been named Hong Kong Top-10 Outstanding Tertiary student, Tai Po District Outstanding Youth, Hong Kong Jockey Club scholar and Prospective English Teachers scholar.

Both of the winners expressed their gratitude for the support and opportunities offered to them by the University, which have inspired them to become determined educators.
