With the support from Lee Hysan Foundation (LHF), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a screening of Zero to Hero on 4 September 2021, a film featuring the inspiring story of Paralympic gold medallist William So Wah-wai. The event was attended by Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, EdUHK President; Ms Cecilia Ho, LHF President; Board Members of EdUHK Foundation; and around 500 guests including EdUHK staff members, students and alumni; and students with special education needs (SEN), their teachers and parents. 

Professor Cheung said, “William became a legend through his own determination and diligence, with love and patience from his mother, and guidance and encouragement from his coach. I believe parents and teachers who support SEN students will resonate with the joys and sorrows captured in the movie.” Professor Cheung also thanked teachers of SEN students for their support, and hoped the public could pay more attention to SEN students and their parents.

After the film, William and his mother, Mrs So Hon Siu-ching, took part in a sharing session, along with Ms Sandra Ng Kwan-yue, the producer and leading actor in the film; Director Mr Jimmy Wan Chi-man; actor Mr Fung Ho-yeung, who played the teenage William; and Mr Au Yeung Ka-kue, William’s coach in real life.

William encouraged everyone to set a goal, “Never give up. Even if you eventually fail, you will always gain something meaningful from the experience.” Mrs So attributed William’s success to his persistence and fighting spirit, and humbly described herself as “a mother who just does her job”. Ms Ng added that, “Everyone faces challenges and hardships in life. It’s important for us to identify our dreams, then work hard and catch up just like William.”
