EdUHK Holds Study Tour in Gansu Province to Explore Cultural Diversity of Belt and Road Initiative

The Silk Road represents a great achievement of the Chinese nation in reaching out to the world. To further enhance students' multicultural literacy, strengthen their historical and geographical knowledge, and cultivate their affection for home and country, the Department of Chinese Language Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised a study tour to Gansu province between 14 and 20 December 2024. They visited Gansu to see several historical landmarks and meet with important partners, thereby cultivating cultural pride and enhancing patriotism and national identity.

The group of 28 EdUHK members led by Dr Feng Zhenhui, lecturer in the Department of Chinese Language Studies, visited Lanzhou University and Northwest Normal University (NWNU). At Lanzhou University, they shared experiences and insights on topics such as language learning, cultural inheritance, and international perspectives, after the welcome introduction by Professor Li Lifang, Dean of the School of Chinese Languages and Literatures of the university. The discussion established a closer partnership between both institutions.

The group paid a visit to Northwest Normal University (NWNU), where they participated in a presentation on the development of Chinese language education by student representatives. They then engaged in discussions with Professor Yang Naming, Dean of the School of Teacher Education and Professor Zhao Xiaoxia of NWNU about the future development of Chinese language education. This exchange programme allows students to have a better understanding of the development of Chinese language education.

In the following days, the group also visited historical landmarks such as Mogao Caves, Jiayuguan City and Echoing-Sand Mountain, experiencing the unique charm and wisdom of the culture of the Western Region. This study tour enabled the students to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural diversity of the Belt and Road Initiative and enriched their historical and cultural knowledge, as well as enhancing their sense of national pride. Through “travelling far and wide”, the trip encouraged the students to continue exploring their future academic and cultural research.

The Department of Chinese Language Studies of the University has actively organised study tours in the Greater Bay Area and other cities in mainland China, such as the Lingnan Culture Study Tour to Guangzhou organised in May 2024, to experience the uniqueness of Lingnan culture and its regional characteristics.
