EdUHK and Umm Al-Qura University Foster Internationalisation through Two-way Summer Exchange Programmes

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and Umm Al-Qura University (UQU) in Saudi Arabia have successfully concluded a two-way summer exchange programme focused on academic learning, linguistic studies, and cultural exchange. This initiative underscores the commitment of both institutions to promote internationalisation and enhance global collaboration.

Dr David Kang, Director of General Education, led a group of 10 students from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, departing from 4 July to 2 August to participate in a four-week credit-bearing Summer Arabic Language Programme offered by UQU.  The programme was specially designed for beginners, aiming to develop proficiency in Arabic language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Complementing their language studies, students explored Saudi Arabia’s rich history and cultural traditions through a series of immersive excursions and activities. Highlights included trips to Jeddah and Taif cities, where students gained insights into Saudi Arabia’s focus on nurturing talent, scientific innovation, and its vibrant cultural heritage. They also learned about the Mawhiba Programme, an initiative aimed at empowering youth and fostering a culture of innovation and sustainable development in Saudi Arabia.

Professor Wardah Abduallah Alasmari, Vice President for Business Development and Community Partnership of UQU, emphasised that this collaboration aligns with its 2027 strategy to enhance its global standing and activate student exchange programmes with distinguished international academic institutions.

Students reflected positively on their experiences. Immersed in an authentic Arabic-speaking environment, they rapidly developed their language proficiency and communication skills through daily classes and real-life interactions. The excursions and cultural activities linked classroom learning to practical applications, enhancing understanding and critical thinking. Supportive Saudi hosts fostered curiosity and confidence, enabling students to complete the programme with stronger language abilities and a deeper appreciation of Saudi culture.

In return, EdUHK hosted 10 students from UQU, along with Dr Majed Mahmood Farrash, Head of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Department of UQU. The students participated in the newly initiated four-week Summer Short-term Programme 2025, resulting in a successful two-way exchange of students during the summer of 2025. This collaboration signifies EdUHK’s expanded strategic engagement in the Middle East by establishing partnerships dedicated to developing Hong Kong into an international hub for education.
