The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) co-hosted the 14th Conference of Asia-Pacific Consortium of Teaching Chinese as an International Language with Monash University in Australia, and Ewha Womans University in South Korea, on 7-8 November 2023. The event was dedicated to promoting academic exchanges and fostering the continued development of teaching Chinese as an international language (TCIL) in the Asia-Pacific region.

Under the theme of ‘Humanistic Care, Inheritance, and Innovation’, the conference brought together participants to address learner diversity and the varied learning needs of TCIL, as well as its new challenges in the post-pandemic era. This year’s conference attracted experts and scholars from the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA, the European Association of Chinese Teaching and the Asia-Pacific Consortium of TCIL – the three major regional international Chinese teaching associations – and from other parts of the world, sharing best practice and the outcomes of theoretical research in the field. 

Addressing the opening ceremony were EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, and Professor Pamela Leung Pui-wan, Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) of the University’s Faculty of Humanities. 

On the occasion, Dr Nguyen Hoang Anh, President of the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Teaching Chinese as an International Language; Professor Joël Bellassen, President of the European Chinese Language Teaching Association; Dr Wu Yu, Director of the American Chinese Teachers Association; Dr Huang Hui from Monash University; Dr Lee Jieun from Ewha Womans University; and Dr Cheung Lin-hong from EdUHK, delivered keynote speeches at the conference, discussing the latest research trends in international Chinese language teaching.

The conference also featured 12 parallel sessions with around 70 papers being presented, covering a wide range of topics such as Chinese language skill development, cultural exchange and teaching innovation. The event attracted over 200 participants from 13 countries and regions. 

Additionally, a forum for the International Journal of Chinese Language Education was held to discuss the future development and promotion of the journal, followed by the closing remarks delivered by Dr Nguyen Hoang Anh and Dr Liang Yuan, Associate Director of the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education at EdUHK.
