We learn Chinese characters through discerning how they vary. This book investigates the following questions: 

• What are the different categories of linguistic variation in characters?
• In what ways do characters vary in each of these categories?
• What are the different situations in which such variation occurs?

Variation in sound, written form, stroke order, and function of component is analysed and illustrated using the characters listed in the primary school curriculum in Hong Kong.
