Mr Norman Mendoza, PhD student at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), has published 10 research papers since joining the University in 2019. Mendoza received the Belt and Road Scholarship three years ago and opted to pursue his doctoral studies at EdUHK because of its leadership in education, with renowned experts in the areas of educational assessment and educational psychology.
Mendoza received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the Angeles University Foundation in the Philippines, back in 2011. He then completed a master’s degree in counselling and psychotherapy at the University of Saint Joseph, Macau in 2014. Prior to his doctoral studies, Mendoza spent five years in teaching and research in the higher education sector.
“On completing my PhD, my goal is to become an academic in Hong Kong. It is a place which fosters the pursuit of knowledge and knowledge transfer. The rigorous study environment of EdUHK allows me to immerse myself in meaningful research,” said Mendoza.
Under the supervision of Dr Yan Zi, Associate Professor and Dr Ronnel King, Adjunct Associate Professor, at C&I, Mendoza focuses his studies on exploring social and contextual factors to student learning, self-assessment practice in English learning, psychometric validation of instruments, as well as mental health amid the pandemic. His doctoral thesis aims to integrate self-regulated learning and self-determination theory in predicting student achievement.
He is also the adviser and co-founder of LifeRisksPH, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting youth well-being and preventing suicide.
